Meditation Dome
from Sunny Tsai

As a volunteer, I have just finished an earthbag dome in Taiwan. This building is for the use of monk’s meditation. To reach my idea of carbon reduction and sustainability, I avoided using all kinds of industrial materials and used only a minute quantity of cement. More than 1400 volunteers were involved in this project, and all the volunteers are buddhists. That is the reason why so many novices were willing to devote themselves in this hard work. The photos were taken during the building process.

The dome is 6 meters in diameter. To people’s surprise, the interior space looks so wide and comfortable. It’s super cool and the Monks can enjoy the atmosphere of quiet and peacefulness. One summer day at noon we surveyed the temperature, and found 6 degree (Centigrade) difference between the interior and outdoors.
